Presentation: Cast aluminium alloys for anodizing applications. Overcoming the negative impact from alloy intermetallics

Can Akyıl currently works as Technical Director at Politeknik Metal in Turkey and he is in charge of production, customer service and R&D for light metals in the Coventya Group. Prior to joining Politeknik/Coventya, he was part of the Welding Alloys R&D team and oversaw the Turkish office for 3 years. Can Akyıl graduated with a bachelor's degree in metallurgy and materials engineering from the Istanbul Technical University and continued his master's thesis in the same department where he worked on the electrochemistry and corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys. He is currently doing his doctorate in the metallurgical department of the Istanbul Technical University with a planned degree in mid. 2019.

Alessandro Corrà has been the General Managers of SAT (Surface Aluminium Technologies) SpA in Verona since 2010. Previously he occupied several managerial positions at Trevisan Cometal from 2003 to 2010.

Alessandro Corrà graduated with a State Diploma in Mechanical engineering from the University in Padova.

Iris De Graeve (Master in Engineering Sciences: chemistry, 1995, VUB; PhD in Engineering Sciences, 2001, VUB) is professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in the research group of Electrochemical and Surface Engineering SURF, and part-time (10%) at Ghent University. She is teaching at VUB, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Ghent University courses on chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry, biometals and metal surface processing

Presentation: Closing recycling loop – powder coated profiles made of recycled aluminium for building applications.

Malgorzata Chojak Halseid is a senior research scientist and project manager, working with Hydro Aluminium, Primary Metal at Karmøy, on the west coast of Norway.

She holds a PhD in chemistry (with focus on electrochemistry/electrocatalysis) from University in Warsaw. Part of her expertise is in surface treatment of aluminium, mainly of extruded profiles. She works with corrosion and corrosion protection processes, like anodizing and powder coating, in order to give technical support to the customers in surface-related topics.

Presentation: Self lubrication effects on corrosion and tribological properties of anodized aluminium surfaces.

Prof. Dr. Arjan Mol is Full Professor ‘Corrosion Technology and Electrochemistry’ at the Materials Science and Engineering Department of Delft University of Technology.

Nowadays Arjan Mol is research leader of several fundamental and applied research projects in the framework of several industrial, EU and national funding schemes focused on local corrosion and electrochemistry, coating-metal interface engineering and the development and evaluation of Cr(VI)-free inhibitor technology and self-healing corrosion protective coatings. Furthermore, Arjan Mol is President of the European Federation of Corrosion EFC, Member of the Scientific and Technology Advisory Committee of the EFC and co-chairman of the yearly largest European Corrosion Conference EUROCORR. Arjan Mol is also the Dutch representative of the International Corrosion Council ICC, Honorary professor at the University of Science and Technology USTB Beijing China and Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier’s Corrosion Science.

Simon Meirsschaut is a civil electrotechnical engineer of Ghent State University (Belgium)and Master of Arts of Princeton University (New Jersey, USA). He started his career in scientific research in the field of solid state device physics. At the National Investment company in Belgium, he was the initiator of several industrial initiatives in the fields of the environment, electronics and other. He was government commissioner and finance manager of Synatom, the company in charge of the Belgian nuclear fuel cycle.

Since 1986 he has been an independent consultant to management and interim manager. He owned and managed the Belgian anodising company Analu from 1988 to 2007. Nowadays he is serving the aluminium surface treatment industry as Technical Coordinator of ESTAL where he is monitoring relevant European legislation. He also takes care of the daily management of QUALUBEL, the association of Belgian Qualicoat and Qualanod label holders.

Bernard Gilmont is Director Engineered Products at European Aluminium. B.Gilmont joined European Aluminium in March 2000 as Mass Transportation Manager and since them became Director Engineered Products also covering automotive, building and standards. Prior to joining, he spent 6 years in various manager positions in the oil industry for Petrofina-Total. He holds a degree on Mechanical Engineering from the Ecole Polytechnique de Louvain, a degree on Energy & Oil Products Engineering from the IFP-School (Paris) and an Executive Master in Management from Solvay Business School (Brussels).

Herman Terryn is Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) Belgium. Currently he is the head of department of Materials and Chemistry. He focuses his research on corrosion and protection of metals within the Research Group Electrochemical and Surface Engineering (SURF) at VUB. www.vub.ac.be/SURF.

He is also part time Professor Corrosion at TU-Delft. He published 439 web of science papers, h-factor 41, and supervised 50 Ph.D’s. He was invited as plenary & keynote speaker at important international conferences: Gordon Conference, ECASIA, EUROCORR, ISE, Electrochemical Society Meetings, Passivity Meeting, Corrosion NACE, EMCR,ASST, Metallurgy, Alusil, ESTAL. He is a Methusalem Grant holder 7 year (2011-2023) 'Design and Prediction of Nanostructured Metal Surfaces' (NANOMET) with a budget of 7 M Euro. He was the winner of the Eu-Award European Federation of Corrosion 2014, Pisa Italy and the Corrosion H.H Uhlig Award Electrochemical Society in 2017, Washington, USA. In 2016 he was honored with the Franqcui Chair “Durability of materials” 2016 at University of Antwerp. He is also honorary Professor at USTB, Beijing China.

A.Deacon Juhl has worked for 25 years in the area of the finishing of aluminum. She was a research scientist for five years at the Technical University of Denmark and did her Ph.D thesis on "Pulse Anodizing of Extruded and Cast Aluminum Alloys."

During this period, she established a personal network in Europe, the U.S., and Scandinavia. As a consultant within the field of finishing of aluminum she has worked with all different kinds of chemical and electrochemical surface treatments, such as anodizing – type I, II and III, Chromating, electroplating, and electroless plating.

Deacon Juhl worked for three years in an anodizing job shop as the development and quality manager, where she successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice.

For the last 16 years she has worked full-time consulting customers in order to enhance the value of their aluminum products – with a break of five years at one of her customers, an Aerostructure company as Supervisor for the surface department.

Dr. Alberto Abad has been working in Alvarez-Schaer for twelve years. Currently in charge of the Research and Development Department of the company.

Presentation: The development of a very good seal resistant also to alkali, requested by automotive industry, together with the development of a nickel free cold seal suitable for architectural anodizing

Fabio Vincenzi is the R&D technical director of Italtecno Srl, a firm specialized in aluminum finishing technologies (chemicals, equipment and turn-key plants).

He graduated in chemistry in the early nineties in Italy, then started to work as a lab technician in the R&D laboratory of Italtecno.

He has actively participated to important developments like Multicolour , and new two step coloring and sealing technologies of anodized aluminum.

He then became the R&D technical director of Italtecno Srl and he has deposited a few patents for the surface treatment of aluminum as inventor.

He has written about 15 scientific papers for many international congresses on surface treatment.

He also written many scientific papers for aluminum magazines.

Presentation: Coloring of Anodized Aluminium for long-lasting outdoor applications

Thomas Heber is Senior Technical Marketing Manager of the aluminum dyes and chemicals business of Clariant Produkte (Deutschland) GmbH, located in Frankfurt/Germany. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering/Colours and Coatings technology.

Before joining Clariant (former Hoechst AG) in 1986 he collected first industrial experiences for some years in the development of coatings for the furniture, electronic and automobile industry. At Clariant he held different positions within the technical marketing of todays Business Unit Pigments from quality control, development of colorants, some of them being patented, up to technical customer service.

Oliver Katschmareck is the Global Product Manager for Anodizing and Conversion Coating at Chemetall. Mr. Katschmareck has been active in the field of aluminum surface finishing since 1991, and throughout his professional career has developed expertise in metallurgy and extrusion as well as in practical applications of anodizing and pretreatment.

He has over 15 years of experience working on product design and development of chemical products for aluminum surface finishing. He studied at the Technical University of Berlin, where he earned his degree in Industrial Engineering.

He is happily married and is a proud father of two beautiful daughters.

Presentation: Anodic E-Coating: what is it and in which direction does it go?

Mr. Lorenzo Villa is a chemist, with a diploma of the Technical Insitute ITIS Chimici Giulio Natta of Bergamo (Italy). He has been active in various positions in the field of E-Coat Technology for 25 years now. He has been involved in Research and Development at SALCHI SPa, has been responsbile for the E-Coat Laboratory at BASF coatings and later at ALCEA Industries. Since April 2013 he has taken the function of E-coat R&D Laboratory Manager at INDUSTRIA CHIMICA REGGIANA.
